Story behind the song
Edward Butt, aged 22, had shot and killed 20 year old Amelia Selina
Phipps out of jealousy because she would not have a long term
relationship with him. They were near neighbours on adjoining farms
at Arlingham. Amelia was friendly towards Edward but simply did not
want him. They had at least two violent quarrels and in the end he
murdered her with a shotgun. He was duly arrested and charged with the crime. He was tried at Gloucester Assizes on Christmas Eve 1873 and
the jury rejected his contention that the shooting had been an
accident.

Lyrics
Edward was a farmhand, a good man
Amelia his neighbour, his sweet heart
Childhood lovers never to part
Ten years later she stil held his heart
So he asked her, will you be my lady?
She said, oh Edward dont blame me
I'm in love with a man from the town
We'll be married and we'll settle down
CHORUS
They hanged him from the gallows
For the crime of jealousy
And she buried in the churchyard
The price she paid for his envy
Amelia's words cut deeply
Left Edward heartbroken, angry
In a moment his love had all gone
He swore revenge for leading him on
So broken with nothing to lose
He loaded the bullets he would use
And aimed just under her breast
Now they both have a hole in their chest
CHORUS
He ran for the hills cross the river
In his garden with the bullet they found her
They hunted him down to pay
To hang on Christmas Day
With the noose tied Edward stood waiting
Murder the crime he was facing
His feet fell, his body went cold
Left with thoughts of their love when they were 10 years old
CHORUS
