Story behind the song
The story of Demeter, Persephone and Hecate is a Greek mythology story. Mythology stories are living examples and guides which can inspire and enhance our lives. There are many different perspectives to experience the story or Persephone. I wrote a song about one aspect. When I was a teenager, I became obsessed with Mythology stories in my High School library. Since those early days, every spring Equinox, as the trees begin budding and the grasses begin greening, I’ve seen in my minds eye, Persephone joyfully returning to her Mother, the Earth. In the Fall, in my minds eye, I see her sadly leaving the presence of her Mother but joyfully returning to her life in the Underworld. The years passed. I became a Mother. My daughter, Sunshine was a teenager when I wrote the song. Most teenagers go through a period of time when it is necessary to emotionally remove themselves from attachment from their parents. It is painful for parents and painful to the children, kind of feels like.. Hades incarnate... Haha. But it is a necessary part of growing up for children, and a necessary part of loving, acceptance and release, for the Parents. When I wrote the song, I was missing my child and hoping that like Persephone, Sunshine would come back someday and be my daughter again instead remaining the stranger who looked like my daughter. I felt the grief Demeter felt, I felt as lifeless as the earth was in the mythology story. Demeter didn’t give up… She had patience and love... And she understood that once the seeds of the pomegranate were eaten, her daughter would never be a young child totally in her care again, her daughter would always have another life to live... (In my and my Daughters life, this represented her adolescence, her flying with her own wings so to speak) Back to the story of Demeter, this didn’t mean that Demeter's daughter would never return. When Persephone did return... The whole Earth burst forth in color and life as an expression of Joy. In my life, I hoped our relationship would return to love... And indeed... It has. The Mother Maiden Crone story helped me to have patience and understanding through that time. There is no joy like a Mother’s joy.
Lyrics
Do you see the Greening Fields Do you see the Budding Trees? Persephone is coming back, she’s running up the stairs. Persephone was playing in the Garden, She was her Mother’s pride and joy When suddenly, she disappeared , no trace of her was found. The Mother searched all over the Earth, She had no time to tend the Garden, She mourned the loss of her precious Daughter, Till Nothing Green would grow. Chorus Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer The Year Wheel turns around. The Earth Celebrates Renewal of Life, when Persephone returns. The Mother Searched and mourned, She cried, “Where has my Child gone”. When Hecate Spoke in her Knowing way, She’s down in the underworld. Six seeds of Pomegranate she did consume While held in Hades Realm. And for each seed, a Month she must stay,” Six months her Mother mourns. Chorus Winter has been hard and cold, But now the Seasons change, By Maiden, Mother and Crone, Rejoice, the Earth Rejoice. Do you see the Greening Fields Do you see the Budding Trees? Persephone is coming back, she’s running up the stairs.
