Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
I think the idea came from the picture - taken in Dimmingsdale, Staffordshire on my iPhone, one sunny Sunday. Also inspired a little by the main character in Mark Lawrence's brilliant Broken Empire trilogy. Read it.
Lyrics
Despair sucked like a whirlpool Hungry and black I stared into the darkness And the darkness stared back I was ready for salvation But something held me back I was lost, and then I found myself On the left hand track Oh don't go down that road, they said, It'll turn a boy's blood cold But I've never been amenable To doing what I'm told And there's something about the righteous Raise the hackles on my back So I smiled and took my leave Along the left hand track (And I never looked back) I saw friends and acquaintances Discarded like trash I ordered hallowed institutions Burnt away to ash I would have sold my soul to the devil But the old boy couldn't raise the cash How I'm relishing the hellish On the left hand track Oh some say I'm a Demon With a heart as black as sin But if you find yourself attracted To my devilish grin And you'll wager untold riches For the conscience that you lack Take my hand and walk beside me On the left hand track (And never look back)

Always though this was brilliant. Love those lyrics, fantastic writing. Really great job on the music and the vibe, excellent performance - there's something about this song that reminds me a lot of Bad Company.

Man I totally loved this. Once again you have posted a killer tune that shines in so many ways. First and foremost, I loved the lyrics and your vocal delivery. They made the tune. Secondly, the relentless, crushing, dark groove was the perfect platform for your great lead solos. The hendrixy lick that comes in about 3:30 and repeats later is excellent. You are an excellent writer, musician, and all around Indie artist. Station add for sure. Congrats on a very cool tune!

Solid rocker from you Seth, a joy to listen to - as always - WTG....love it.
That bass drum is enormous - solid classic rocking done to perfection. Glad I had two excuses to hear it, both in the Clicker's Club player and in Larry's Showcase. Cheers!

Smokin'. Love your great voice Steve. Your guitar work and tone is always just first class - dig the raking bite on the notes around 3:21 on. Super production on a first rate rocker! This one raised goose bumps!

Heard this on the CC player and wanted to drop by and let you know this one is a real ear catcher! Great song charged with lots of raw energy! The guitar sounds like it was recorded through an amp and to me that is always the best sound. Nice solo guitars at around 320 and the end. Great performance on all instrumentation, vocals, writing and production!

You never cease to amaze me with your fantastic music, Steve! This is absolutely the best song I have heard anywhere for a very long time! The guitars sound so great all the way through, (please reveal how you create that awesome sound)! Your vocals sound better than ever and the lyrics just feel so right. That hook-line with "The left hand track" is pure genius :) I think I will bury my guitar and take up knitting... Naaaa, well maybe not, but thanks for raising the bar. You are a great inspiration!

Superb lyrics, brilliantly sung, you seem to have taken on different character with this song - amazing versatility. Love the guitar work and heavy rock styling, works perfectly with the subject matter. I like the devilish, evil edge.

This is deceptively awesome. What you get into on guitar starts making great sense once you start singing. Great songwriting. Hard hitting rock. Pro sound quality. The skill in the details on the guitars is mind-blowingly tight.
